Japanese major was established in 1973 as the first Japanese undergraduate program in Guangxi. With rich teaching experience and professional accumulation, it has two secondary master programs, namely Academic Master of Japanese Language and Literature and Master of Japanese Translation. In 2014, it was recognized as a provincial advantageous and characteristic academic program, and in 2015, it was listed among the provincial advantageous and characteristic academic program clusters. In 2019, it was selected as a provincial-level first-class undergraduate program. In 2024, it ranked 70th in the Shanghai Ranking's National Ranking of Academic Subjects and 1st among similar programs in universities in Guangxi.
Educational Objectives: The major aims to cultivate innovative talents with social responsibility, a sense of rule of law, an innovative spirit, practical abilities, and an international perspective to meet the needs of the country’s foreign exchange, economic construction, and Japanese education and academic research. The cultivation objectives of the Japanese major require not only professional knowledge of Japanese but also strong listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills.
Major Courses: Basic Japanese, Advanced Japanese, Japanese Conversation, Japanese Viewing, Listening and Speaking, Japanese Reading, Basic Japanese Writing, Translation Theory and Practice, Interpreting Theory and Practice, Introduction to Japanese Linguistics, Introduction to Japanese Literature, Overview of Japan, Intercultural Communication, along with elective courses such as Translation Technology, Introduction to Japanese Culture, General Introduction to Chinese Culture, and Introduction to Research.
Employment Prospects: Graduates primarily engage in Japanese-related work in government offices, business and trade, education, research, finance, judiciary, tourism, and other organizations and enterprises. Some work in Japanese companies or Sino-Japanese joint ventures. The rate of graduates pursuing further studies has been increasing year by year, with many graduates advancing to renowned domestic universities or continuing their studies at prestigious institutions in Japan, such as the University of Tsukuba, Tohoku University, and Waseda University.
